Building a Complete Biking Setup: Bike, Gear and Accessories
The bike gets the headline, the gear gets forgotten, and the accessories get bought on impulse. Here is a better order.
A complete biking setup is really three separate purchases: the bike itself, the protective gear you wear, and the accessories that make daily riding easier. Riders who save hard for the bike and treat the other two as an afterthought usually end up with an expensive machine, a cheap jacket and no plan for either.
The bike is only step one
Whatever you ride, a heavy tourer, a sport bike or a daily commuter, the bike does not protect you in a fall. That job belongs entirely to the gear you are wearing, which is why a realistic budget sets money aside for protection before the bike purchase is even finished.
Gear is the layer that does not change with the bike
A certified jacket, gloves and boots protect the same way regardless of what you ride. This is worth remembering if you plan to upgrade or switch bikes later, since a properly built Gravlok Premium Mesh Riding Jacket or Gravlok Premium 3 Season Jacket moves with you rather than the machine. Our equipment checklist covers the buying order in more detail.
Accessories fill in the rest
Phone mounts, luggage, intercoms and spare parts matter, but they are the layer that makes an already protected rider more comfortable, not the layer that protects them in the first place. Buy accessories once the gear underneath them is sorted, not instead of it. Our guide to biker accessories and motorcycle essentials covers the small items worth owning.
Where Gravlok fits
We build the protective layer, not the bike or the electronics, and we build it to your measurements if off the shelf sizing does not suit you. See how that works in buying official Gravlok gear, or start a custom build today.
