Choosing a Helmet That Works With Your Riding Jacket
Your helmet and your jacket collar meet at the same two inches of your neck. Here is how to make sure they actually get along.
Helmets and jackets are usually bought from different places, on different days, for different reasons, and most riders never check whether the two actually work together. They meet at the same few inches of your neck, and a mismatch there is more than a comfort problem.
Collar height matters more than people think
A tall jacket collar and a full face helmet with a low chin bar can fight each other, pushing the collar up into your jaw every time you turn your head. Before you commit to a jacket, sit on the bike in full gear and turn your head both ways. If the collar catches the helmet, it will do that on every single ride.
Buckles, snaps and chafing
Metal collar snaps and helmet strap buckles have a habit of finding each other at exactly neck height. It sounds minor until you have ridden two hours with a buckle digging into your throat. A soft, low profile collar closure, like the kind used on the Gravlok Premium Mesh Riding Jacket, avoids most of this friction entirely.
Visibility works as a system
Reflective detailing on a jacket does the most good when it is not fighting a dark, matte helmet for a driver's attention. Pairing a jacket with reflective panels and a helmet with even a small reflective strip gives you visibility from more angles than either piece manages alone.
Get the sizing right on both ends
A helmet that is correctly sized should sit snug with no rocking, and a jacket collar should sit close to the neck without gapping. Loose on either end undoes some of the protection on both. Our sizing and fit guide covers the jacket side of that equation, and a custom build lets you adjust the collar height and closure to suit the helmet you already own.
