Water resistant and waterproof are not the same thing. Here is what keeps rain out on a long wet ride.
Rain finds every weakness in your motorcycle gear. A jacket that shrugs off a ten minute shower can still soak you through on a two hour ride, which is why waterproof motorcycle jackets are built very differently from water resistant ones.
Coating versus membrane
A water resistant jacket usually relies on a surface coating that wears off. A genuinely waterproof jacket uses a breathable membrane bonded into the shell, which blocks water from outside while letting sweat vapour escape. That second half matters more than riders expect, because a jacket that traps sweat leaves you just as wet.
Seams and closures decide it
Water gets in through stitching, zips and cuffs long before it soaks through fabric. Look for taped or sealed seams, a storm flap covering the main zipper, and cuffs that close tight over your gloves rather than under them.
